The basis of the calligraphic piece is the song «Mermaid Curse» by Green Apelsin.
The lyrics tell the story of a girl who ends up aboard a pirate ship. The pirates assaulted her, drowned her, and in retaliation, she became a mermaid who lures and kills sailors.
I chose the pareo as my calligraphic subject because it not only reminds me of the sea, but also its material—fabric—is connected to the song’s lines: «Tail—her torn dress.»
