Bastarda (from French bâtarde—"mixed,» «of mixed parentage») is a family of late-Gothic calligraphic scripts that originated in Western Europe as a hybrid of two traditions.
The script developed at the intersection of rigorous, monumental bookhand and swift clerical cursive. Its primary goal was to accelerate the process of book transcription without sacrificing the neatness or solemnity of the manuscript.

A historical example
Bastarda merges strict Gothic script with free cursive. It is easily recognized by its slight slant, rounded forms, and expressive loops on the ascenders.
