Beyond the Glance: The Art of Prolonged Attention.

A curatorial and artistic project exploring temporal deceleration in contemporary visual culture.

I create spatial and visual experiences that counter the acceleration of contemporary culture, transforming prolonged looking into an active artistic medium. I am open to curatorial collaborations, institutional exhibition proposals, and critical dialogue on the mechanics of attention.

The Problem

Modern visual culture forces a regime of accelerated perception—images are instantly recognized, evaluated, and replaced.

In this hyper-fast environment, the ability to linger before an image is lost.

The Approach / Manifesto

Introduction of the transition from artist’s time to viewer’s time.

Methods of deceleration: repetition, seriality, minimal variation, emptiness, blur, light, spatiality, and absence of explicit events.

Contemplation as an active practice rather than passive state.

Spatial Dramaturgy

The sequence of deceleration: Initial glance — Delay — Contemplation — Disappearance of chronological time (temporal shift of attention).

How the physical/digital space is organized to enforce this rhythm.

Work 1: Series «Intervals of Light»

Исходный размер 2609x1751

«Intervals of Light» explores temporal sedimentation through long-exposure photography. Capturing a stationary room over a full diurnal cycle, the work forces the viewer to transition from a fast glance to a meditative contemplation of shifting photons.

Concept & Problem: Modern screens demand rapid scanning of information. This series features long-exposure photographs of a single architectural interior over the course of 12 hours, where the movement of light is almost imperceptible at a single glance.Viewer Experience: At first, the image appears as a static monochrome plane. Only after prolonged looking (at least 2–3 minutes) do subtle gradients, shifting shadows, and the passage of time reveal themselves.

Work 2: Series «The Weight of Dust»

Исходный размер 2609x1751

«The Weight of Dust» uses seriality to challenge the perception of replication. Thirty identical frames reveal distinct micro-changes upon close, repeated inspection, turning time into a physical sediment.

Concept & Problem: Addressing how mass-produced imagery erases uniqueness. This work consists of 30 identical photographic prints of a blank grey wall, each taken at one-month intervals over two and a half years, capturing microscopic changes in dust accumulation and surface texture.Viewer Experience: The fast look registers them as identical copies. Prolonged observation unveils microscopic variations, individual histories of each surface, and the silent accumulation of time.

Work 3: Video Installation «Threshold of Focus»

Исходный размер 2609x1751

«Threshold of Focus» presents a static, ultra-slow videoscape of a blurred horizon. By removing narrative events and rapid motion, the work creates a temporal vacuum where chronological time dissolves into pure presence.

Concept & Problem: Moving away from narrative cinema and rapid editing. A single-channel video showing a close-up of a blurred horizon where water meets fog, with a frame rate so slow that motion becomes virtually imperceptible.Viewer Experience: Viewers expecting a dynamic video loop experience frustration initially, which gradually shifts into a calm state where breathing syncs with the breathing of the image.

Call to Action & Contacts

Let’s collaborate on exhibitions, site-specific installations, and critical art projects.

Yana Basalay — interdisciplinary artist and a fourth‑year student at the Higher School of Economics, majoring in Design and Contemporary Art. Work with the intersection of abstraction, photography, installation, and performance. At the core of my practice is the exploration of perception, emotional memory, and the subtle boundary between what is visible and what is felt. I am interested in art’s ability to transcend the visual, to evoke feelings, and to create space for inner dialogue.Through minimalist forms, mixed media, and interaction with space, I explore silence, contemplation, memory, and the variability of human perception. My practice combines photographic and printed series, abstract works, spatial installations, and performances.yaebasalay@edu.hse.ru
