The journal’s creed is expressed in Issue 37 from 1923: «To provide a vibrant and diverse picture of the life and construction of our reviving country, to depict in rich literary, artistic, and photographic material the feverish pace of the complex and interesting political and cultural life of the entire world. […] To fully and comprehensively illuminate the lives of all, even in the most remote corners of our vast country plowed by the Revolution.»

In 1925, the print run reached 500,000 copies. Numerous photographs dictated the layout principle—from illustrations. The chief editor and founder of the magazine, Mikhail Koltsov, was arrested in 1938. Alexei Surkov succeeded him, and under his leadership, the magazine’s signature style was established: a portrait of a famous person on the cover, photo reports, and vibrant color inserts featuring reproductions of paintings. This expensive publication dictated the aesthetic taste of millions of Soviet citizens.

The magazine is famous for featuring A. P. Chekhov as the contributor to the «Fragments of Moscow Life» section between 1883 and 1885.
