On September 30th, an improvised jazz concert was held at the «DOM» Cultural Center. As part of the «Poster Lab,» I participated in creating posters for this event.
My work consisted of four main stages:
1. Photo selection and preparation
2. Composition development
3. Printing and typography work
4. Exhibition setup
1. Photo SelectionPer the project guidelines, the poster needed to be based on a photograph associated with the performers' music. I chose a shot of a nighttime fence illuminated by two lanterns. It conveyed a slightly mysterious and chaotic atmosphere that I felt in the musicians' concert music. Furthermore, the pools of light resembled beams from stage spotlights, which served as the starting point for the subsequent composition. The photograph was printed on orange paper, lending the image additional expressiveness and texture.
2. Composition DevelopmentThe process of creating the poster was based on the principle of improvisation, which resonated with the musical event itself. The foundation of the compositional solution was two light spots, which I used as a space to place the text. I also intentionally divided the poster into two unequal sections: I placed a large typographic composition on the left and smaller text blocks on the right. This decision disrupts the customary balance, creates visual tension, and makes the composition more dynamic and attention-grabbing.3. Typography WorkA mandatory requirement of the project was the use of the provided printed letters and phrases. I assembled the textual elements by hand using tape and letters printed on self-adhesive paper. I integrated the names of the concert participants into the silhouettes of light beams, adjusting the placement, scale, and direction of the letters to fit their shape. The combination of large lettering and small text fragments creates a contrast and conveys the nature of free jazz improvisation.
After the work was completed, the poster was exhibited at the «DOM» Cultural Center. Along with the pieces from other participants in the «Poster Lab, ” it became part of the visual design for a musical event.
